Someone needs to explain to me why I never meet a cute, spirited girl like Rose when I'm standing out in the snow feeling sorry for myself on New Year's Eve. ... Wait, that's not what this post is about. Sorry, I'm trying to distract myself from the agony. Oh, the pain burns. It really does. I'm going to complain about "The End of Time" now. But, first, I'll cut for spoilers! ( Do you have a beta at all, RTD? I mean, really. )EATA: *sighs* Just when I was feeling a little itch to write again, I started trolling the TW comms. Big mistake. Is there anything more disheartening than fans who mock other fans by making 'girly' OTPer posts delibertately filled with netspeak and spelling errors? Yes, I know love never lasts in real life-- thank you very much, I've known that for years. It's not a crime to enjoy a 'forever' pairing for escapism. It's a sick, cruel, shitty world out there. So back the hell off from my dreams. -MBM Tags: doctor-who, fanfiction, jack/ianto, torchwood Current Location: An Undamaged TARDIS Current Mood: bitchy Current Music: "Wolf in Me"-- by TV On the Radio

A great review from Dear Author
Not, perhaps, my highest scoring review yet, but one that makes me want to write meta about my own story. She’s spot on that in this one I was perhaps more interested in the murder mystery/ghost story than I was in the romance. Also that it was a deliberate decision to have Jasper’s reconciliation of his religion and his homosexuality already be a done deal. And Charles come from a family which was used to not worrying about whether something was right or not, if they wanted it and could get away with taking it. I hear a lot of people saying “we’re fed up of the coming out plot being the only plot in m/m romance.” So this was an attempt to do something different.
I should be more downcast at the thought that the romance didn’t work for her this time, but I can’t be, because of this:
“Your grasp of the fashions, sights, sound, smells, and feel of the mid-eighteenth century was stunningly vivid. People die of weird medical concerns. Things smell bad. The fashions for men are strange to us. Men are brutal to women and the upper classes brutal to the servants who make their lives comfortable. They cared about things — Papists and class — in ways we don’t understand today. I don’t think I’ve ever FELT like I was *in* a particular time more than I did in this book.”
Which delights my “historical novelist” heart and makes me glad I put in the moment where Charles criticizes Jasper’s tendency not to wear enough makeup.
I’m also very happy that the idea of the woman scorned as a central motif intrigues – though of course she’s not scorned by either of the heroes. Now I want to write a sequel that helps flesh out the things that Sarah F feels are missing in this one. I’m actually very fond of these two characters, and it would be nice to give them a new airing. This time with added vampires. LOL!

Sup, Avatar community? My question is for the members who have been around here for a while. Waaaay back in the summer of 2007( I think. lol) there was an Avatar AU RP here on LJ. My memories are a bit fuzzy since it's been a few years, but here's what I can remember: the pairings were canon(Kataang, Sukka, Maiko, etc.), each character had their own lj account created especialy for the rp, everyone had last names, Sokka was totally awesome and was a comic nerd, aaand I'm pretty sure Zuko had glasses. lol I'm not even going to try touching on main events since two years of random fic and such is muddling my memory... :B
It's just been bugging me for the past few weeks! I remember I was really into it, but I guess I didn't add anything to my memories, 'cause I can't find it anywhere. I hope it all wasn't deleted.
Zing! lol

hello. this is my first post- i wrote it on the IMDB messageboard for Pirates 4. i took a long time writing it and then once i posted, i realized- HELLO, this is IMDB. almost no-one is going to read this through. so i searched for an LJ community, and here i am! this is my first post, and i am looking forward to discussing PotC, hopefully with less trolls than the IMDB boards! ;) i have heard the same rumor from several sources- that Pintel and Ragetti will not be returning in Pirates 4. is it true??? can anyone verify?? if so, then personally, i'm done with the series. i'll still watch my dvds of 1-3 but i'll have no plans to see number 4... and why? after all they are only two minor-ish characters, eh? well, yes and no. i adore P&R. that's item one. item two is, when i heard that P4 was more than just a rumor itself, i immediately had doubts. big ones. let us not forget that Disney is a giant whore. if Pintel and Ragetti are cut out of the fourth movie, it is a sure sign to me that there will be almost nothing left of what i love about this series. what is that exactly? three little letters: FUN. let me tell a little story about Curse of the Black Pearl... i refused to see it in theaters. i was indignant; i had been in love with pirates and sea-stories since i was a little girl. and now, all of a sudden, they were en vogue?! because of some whorish DISNEY MOVIE, of all things? the trailer didn't interest me, Johnny Depp alone is not enough to get me to see a movie (incredible actor though he may be), and aside from that, now i was surrounded by tweenies who thought they were pirates but didn't even know what the word "rigging" meant. my friends told me it was a great movie; they urged me to go- but i was resolute. then Dead Man's Chest came out in theaters a few years later. My boyfriend wanted to see it. i knew he had gone to several movies that he wasn't interested in just to humor me- so i thought i'd return the favor. if nothing else, i thought, at least it would be interesting to know the context of the title's reference to Treasure Island, one of my favorite books. i was not expecting to be overly impressed. but then something amazing happened. i fell in LOVE with it. due in no small part, as i am completely willing to admit, to Stellan Skarsgard's performance as Bootstrap Bill Turner. see, it really was the characters that hooked me. they were well fleshed-out, interesting, they had histories. there were other things too, of course- the music was mindblowing. the CG (and makeup in Bootstrap's case) was unbelievable. the plot was interesting. plus, a (literally) huge bonus: the kraken (which i, myself, have always pronounced "KRAY-ken," btw)! i'm a sucker for mythological creatures. of course, a few things didn't make sense- namely Captain Barbossa, who i had never heard of at that point. everyone else in the theater was cheering, and i was just sitting there like "???" my boyfriend showed me the first movie on DVD at his house before we went to see it a second time- and by then i was standing up screaming with everyone else when Barbossa walked down the stairs. i was irreparably hooked. now back to Pintel and Ragetti. to me, they were new characters when i saw their first scene in DMC- and i was sold on them immediately. it is still one of my top favorite scenes from all three movies! "You know you can't read." LOL! see, once you've seen a well-loved movie a bunch of times, you know the plot inside out. you know the main characters inside out. you know roughly what to expect from a sequel. but what really keeps you coming back? it's the little things! the small details, the laughs, the minor characters and subplots! and if all of those things i love so much are not going to be in Pirates 4, why would i go to see it? i heard that from now on, the movies (movies PLURAL! how many are there going to BE?? please Disney, don't kill this franchise) are JUST going to be about Captain Jack. and as i said earlier, even if Johnny Depp is a great actor, he alone is not enough for me to see a movie. especially if the things i WANT to see will be gone! for example: do you think Ghostbusters 2 would be as widely loved as it is if, say, only Dr. Venkmann appeared in it? not that Ray and Egon are minor characters- but you get my point, don't you? cutting out all the minor characters from PotC 4 (as i hear they are doing- no more Cotton & his parrot, no more Marty, etc) would be equivalent to cutting most of the main characters. there, i've given my two cents. and though it may seem like a silly criterium, the casting and inclusion of Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook as Pintel and Ragetti will be the deciding factor for me. if they aren't on the screen, i won't be in the theater. -KMA Current Mood: disappointed

There's been a lot I've wanted to post about but I barely had a chance to catch my breath this weekend! Saturday, we took a drive up to Grove, OK, to where we purchased a campground membership; the DH was to meet someone there to pick up a piece of art he had bought, and we wanted to look the area over. We ended up exploring some of the several antique/flea market type shops. I ended up buying 11 books-- really good craft and cookbooks-- for only $15.61! We also picked up some collectible Hot Wheels as a surprise for our son, and a couple of other more useful items. We didn't get home until late Sat. night. Sunday was the first Sunday-of-the-month potluck, and I made two dishes from this year's Braum's recipe pamphlet: Bacon Garlic Bread and Mom's Cheesy Veggie Casserole, except in the latter, I substituted mozzarella for the cheddar cheese, and left off the french fried onions. I'm in charge of the potlucks, so I didn't get home till after 1. Just had time to change clothes and relax a bit, and then when our son got home from work at 2:30, we all three went into Stillwater. We had a couple of errands to run, then we went to supper at a local steakhouse buffet. After that we went to see "Avatar". (cut for spoilers) ( Read more... )Tags: movie review, personal
