My First Abortion Party
By Byard Duncan, AlterNet
Posted on July 8, 2009, Printed on July 11, 2009

"Have you guys heard the news?" Maggie (name changed) unwrapped the scarf from around her neck and patted her flat belly. "Preggers." It was around 30 degrees outside, and her cheeks were splashed pink from the Indiana wind.
She had discovered earlier that week, after missing a period and taking the test. "I kind of knew already. My boobs and my lower back have been killing me for a while." She shrugged.
My girlfriend Ali and I exchanged a surprised look. Our forks, dotted with pasta sauce, dangled identically, flaccidly, in our hands. She was quicker than me to gain her composure, and turned to address her best friend.

"What are you going to do?" Unnecessary question, really -- a conversational life vest, used when you’re sputtering for something to say. We knew the answer. Maggie, a 22-year-old college senior with no intention of bringing a child into the world yet, was going to have an abortion. She told us that she had already made up her mind; she had even determined the time, date and location. A better question might have been, "How are you going to pay for it?"

She answered that one before we had a chance to ask. "We’re having a party Friday to raise money," Maggie said. "You guys are obviously invited."

Ugly men the most fertile

WOMEN keen to get pregnant should look for an unattractive man. Ugly men are apparently the most fertile. Good-looking men with lots of lovers, on the other hand, are likely to be less successful at siring offspring.

And scientists say it's all about "sperm load".

In many animal species, the most desirable males restrict their sperm load to ensure there is enough to go around. The same could be true of humans, say scientists.

If they are right, women looking to get pregnant should steer clear of the handsome lotharios.

Sirius is in Hogsmeade, at the cave. Remus has brought Buckbeak to him, and tried to jolly him out of his feelings of uselessness. He's also brought the newspapers, and they've seen Rita's article about Hagrid. Sirius is angry at Dumbledore for giving Hagrid the encourage that ought, in his opinion, have gone to Remus during the previous year.

Unspoilery: a fantastic ending to a fantastic miniseries. Depending on my schedule, I might write an overview in the next week, but I can't guarantee it. So in case I can't: hands down one of the best tv productions I've been privileged to watch.

Torchwood started out wanting to be the adult spin on the Whoverse. There were... missteps. Now? Mission Accomplished. And how. )

In conclusion: I hope the writers and actors are partying like madmen and -women this weekend, because they really earned it. Awesome, awesome, awesome!

Had a really lovely afternoon with two of my favorite fangirls, [info]talitha78 and [info]norwich36 . We went to the Harry Potter exhibition that is currently on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

I'd post more pictures from the actual exhibit, but there were no photos allowed (which annoyed me to no end!).   But it was very cool to see so many of the actual costumes and props from the HP movies.  Because I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old, I was far too amused by how much Hermione Granger's "wand" looked like a hard and veiny erect (albeit skinny) penis.

Look!  My babies are finally loving on each other.   I think laying on one another counts as love in the cat world.

EW.com just posted a list of 12 Sci-Fi hotties of '09.  They didn't include Tom Welling.  Clearly, they are dumbasses.

Things have continued to be interesting since God killed my car*. And by "interesting," I mean "I have gotten sick and my rental car's flimsy plastic front bumper is falling off because (as I am sure Hertz will agree) it is a CHEAP P.O.S."

But there are still absurd vids in the world, so all is well!

[info]4thofeleven unearthed this gem of a video warning us against digital piracy. I recommend watching it before scrolling down to read his comments. The surprise twist is... well, you'll just have to see for yourself.

nu!Trek goes goofy and retro in We Go Together. Yes, the song from Grease! You know you want to.

...I kinda want a second version with both TOS and AOS clips, because apparently they will always be together. And another TOS/AOS vid to "We Didn't Start the Fire." And a cheesy, sappy Spock/Uhura vid to "As the World Falls Down." And a Spock vid to Supertramp's "Logical Song." And a vid about Kirk being Spockblocked to "The Girl All the Bad Guys Want." And possibly "Bohemian Rhapsody," just because. And crack wherein the Enterprise crew decides to be pirates. (Sulu has a sword already! What else do they need?) IT IS JUST ONE OF THOSE MOODS OKAY? DON'T JUDGE ME.

*So claims my homeowners' association, anyway.** I can't verify this since God inexplicably failed to leave a note with His insurance information.
**AAA, however, says the falling branch was an Act of Nature, not God. I therefore conclude the tree was a Huorn, or perhaps a relative of Old Man Willow, out for revenge against our industrialized society.

These songs by the Brobdingnagian Bards seem more than appropriate for a Friday evening/afternoon… (via) Prequel version below!

Both songs are available on CD: The original is from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales, and the prequel is on Real Men Wear Kilts. (Probably better quality than the video, which uses a live version!)

A discussion I was reading brought up the question: "Is having a character you can relate to/identify with/root for necessary to your enjoyment of a show?" in the context of some viewers saying that they no longer enjoyed Weeds because there were no longer any likable characters and they could no longer root for Nancy. Other people listed shows that they watched where they never felt like they identified with anyone--The Sopranos, for instance--and didn't want to, but still loved the show. One person said they felt it was a particularly American thing to base enjoyment of a show on the show fitting into their own moral beliefs. I'm not sure if that's true or not. It's probably more a sign of a particular personality than a nationality.

There are probably more shows on now than ever before with explicitly "bad" characters. One would think these shows required an audience who liked characters who didn’t share their morality, but they seem to also attract a large number of people who think the characters do share their morality until they do something really bad and the illusion is broken (and the writers may be accused of making the character rape the dog/cross the moral event horizon).

More concrete examples within. Probably spoilers inside for Seinfeld, Weeds, Dexter...Hopefully you don't have to follow the shows to follow the post. )

Short version: do you prefer characters you can stand behind as good, even if you have to overlook some of their behavior to think of them that way? Are there certain characters you've liked where this worked and other characters where it didn't work? And if so, why do you think?

The term ‘fan fiction’ is one of the new additions to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary. Here’s their definition, according to the Associated Press:

Fan fiction (1944): stories involving popular fictional characters that are written by fans and often posted on the Internet.

Other new words and phrases making the cut this year are ‘flash mob,’ ‘frenemy,’ ‘sock puppet,’ ‘vlog,’ and ‘webisode.’

[info]fannish5: Five Favorite Works of Historical Fiction
Name your five favorite works of historical fiction, and why you love them.

A challenge after my own heart. Tricky to limit them just to 5, though. Here we go.

1) Child of the Morning, by Pauline Gedge. A fantastic novel about Hatshepsut. Pauline Gedge wrote a couple of novels more set in ancient Egypt. There are more novels about Hatshepsut by other authors, of course, she being one of the most memorable of Egyptian rulers. But this, to me, remains both the definite novel about Hatshepsut and my favourite by Pauline Gedge. Her main character, Hatshepsut, is a three dimensional being, whose flaws the author doesn't hide. The supporting cast comes to vivid life as well. And, miracle of miracles, the antagonist, Hatshepsut's stepson, the future Thutmosis III., isn't demonized, either. (Usually in novels sympathetic to him she's vilified, and vice versa.) The Egyptian world, its beliefs, its every day life, everything is rendered incredibly vivid. I love it to bits.

2) The Josephus Trilogy by Lion Feuchtwanger. (Consists of the volumes: Josephus, The Jew of Rome and The Day Will Come.) Feuchtwanger is one of my favourite authors of the genre, and picking just one novel is tough, but I'm going with this one (slightly cheating as it consists of three volumes, but hey, Lord of the Rings counts as one novel, too). The story deals with Flavius Josephus, aka Josef Ben Matthias, a Jewish writer who changed sides during the Jewish war after his capture, went on to make a career in Rome while at the same time trying to give this a purpose beyond survival by chronicling the history of his people. Josef/Josephus is a typical Feuchtwanger character, morally ambiguous and struggling to find his way between worlds; at the same time as it describes Palestine and Rome of the past, the trilogy also reflects Feuchtwanger trying to make sense of his own present. (The first volume got published in 1933, the last in 1940, after Feuchtwanger, whose books were burned by the Nazis immediately after they came to power, barely made it out of France alive.) Again, there is a great and memorable supporting cast, and precisely because he didn't try to write him as Hitler, Feuchtwanger's version of Domitian, the last Flavian emperor, makes for an incredibly plausible and chilling psychopathic dictator.

3) I, Claudius (novel by Robert Graves, tv version directed by Herbert Wise) . Much as I enjoy the novel, I love the tv series even more, which is why you get linked to it. It boasts of stellar performances, from the best British actors the late 70s had to offer, and of a razor sharp script, taking on the story of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Other tv series dealt with historical subjects. None like this one. None.

4.) Legacy by Susan Kay. Awesome, awesome novel about Elizabeth I., another woman much written about, but this take remains my favourite, capturing Elizabeth herself, Cecil, Robin Dudley and the whole period in its cruel and bawdy glory. It remains frustrating to me that Susan Kay only ever wrote two novels, let me tell you that.

5). The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman. Picking just one of Sharon Penman novel's was hard, and for a while I wavered between The Reckoning and When Christ and his Saints Slept, but ultimately went with this one, her first. It deals with the Yorkist kings, Edward IV and Richard III, and that final period of the Wars of the Roses. The relationship between the brothers is one of the most captivating things about it, so when Edward the pragmatic and morally ambiguous dies two thirds in, one feels the loss. Of course, any novel featuring Richard III. has to come down on one side of the "what happened to the princes?" question. Ms. Penman is an unabashed Ricardian, but her argument as to who killed them and why strikes me as one of the most logical solutions around even if you as a reader are not. As in all her novels, she manages to make a big ensemble memorable, no matter whether it's Warwick's brother John Neville (who usually in Wars of the Roses stories only gets cameo appearances, if that) or Elizabeth Woodville (hooray for morally ambigous female characters as well!). Still my favourite take on the last Plantagenets.

A while ago we had that kinda unfortunate situation that Sifu Kisu was showing his support for the movie. Not that Sifu Kisu's opinion would matter much for our cause but I still thought it would be interesting to see what happened recently. There are a couple of posts on the Kungfumagazine forums and on ASN.

While he was answering a bunch of questions in the ASN thread (and the mods were cleaning up his double posts lol) there was a new interview coming out with M. Night Shyamalan on ifmagazine.com that brought new fuel into the discussion.

And we have a flickr!

http://www.flickr.com/people/racebending
http://www.flickr.com/photos/racebending

[Er, it's a tad unpolished at the moment, but I'll get there! :D]

In the meantime, send me (a) photo(s) and show Paramount, the media, and the world just how diverse and fabulous we are! :D

Just follow these four easy steps:

#1 Create a sign that says "boycott THE LAST AIRBENDER --> racebending.com." (It could be a piece of paper and Sharpie, I'm not fussy, as long as it fulfills point #2!)

#2 Take a picture of yourself with the sign, making sure that the sign is easy to read from the picture-viewer's point of view, no zooming necessary.

#3 Write a paragraph (or less) about why you are personally boycotting TLA. (As a guide, think of what you wrote in your answer to the survey awhile back.)

#4 Send your photo and your paragraph with some iteration of your REAL name, your age, your location, and your self-identifying ethnicity to promote@racebending.com. (You can submit just your first name OR your initials OR your first name + last initial, etc. but it cannot be a screen name. Location will be used for our map. The other info is only for supplementary survey purposes and will likely not be disclosed. If this changes in the future, we'll let you know. ;))

AND THAT'S IT!! See the flickr for examples (Rosie H.'s is currently the only complete one. I have not written my paragraph yet.___.)

Extra Rules:
-PLEASE SHOW YOUR FACE. You can wear facepaint, wear sunglasses and/or a hat, stand very far from the camera (with the sign still super visible) but we'd like to see your face.
-KEEP IT PRETTY PG. Don't use obscene gestures, don't use obscene language, don't be naked, etc.
-GROUPS ARE OK, but each person in the photo must write a paragraph and give required info outlined in #4.
-MULTIPLE PICTURES ARE OK, and hopefully we can run some contests to go with that too. Stay tuned! ;)

Lastly, BE CREATIVE!
-Put extra slogans on your sign and make it extra awesome looking!
-Make your sign multilingual! O_o
-Feature different aspects of yourself! If you're a cosplayer, consider taking the photo in cosplay! If you're a professional earthbender *coughcough[info]teh_bouldercough*, consider highlighting that in your photo!
-Make extra arguments in your photo, a la jedifreac's!

**This should not be a replacement for a boycott video (unless lack of equipment really prevents you, something like that). We highly encourage you to do both, especially since the boycott videos probably have T-shirts attached to them by now. ;)**

I haven't watched a full episode of this show in what, at least a year? It was the episode with Maxima, a Poison Ivy type of character who kills mortal men with her kisses. Apparently kissing men and seeing if they die or not is her M.O. to discovering who her s******* is. Very practical method, I say!

What is really remarkable about this show is its ability to weave elements of sci-fi/fantasy, action, and soap opera together and still come out with something that holds together. And also that this show has creatively survived the departures of both Lex and Lana. Most shows would fall apart if you took away two of the three main characters, but Smallville has been able to retain its tone and identity without them. Of course, it probably helps that there's a huge DC canon to draw from. But still. This show is eight (going on nine) years old and still isn't showing extreme signs of age. That's impressive. (Then again, when you are consistently mediocre from the beginning....) Also, Tom Welling is just stunningly BEAUTIFUL. Like, it's just mind-boggling how good-looking he is. Human beings should not be that attractive.

Okay, I took a break from OTH to finish up the fourth season of Gilmore Girls. "Luke Can See Her Face" felt weird. I don't know, it seemed like all of the characters were off. I still don't get what the point is of Paris dating Ancient Asher, but whatevs. I know he croaks early on in the fifth season, so. Luke and the self-help tapes was almost creepy. It was like an alien had taken over Luke's body and made him outgoing and smiley. Also, the bachelor party seemed really un-Gilmore-like with the scantily-clad girls sleazing around. Yeesh.

I don't know if I've been spoiled by years of Java Junkies squeeing over "Last Week Fights, This Week Tights," but I didn't think the episode was as romantic as it's been touted to be. Lorelai seemed more befuddled by Luke's sudden pursuit of her (and sometimes oblivious) than charmed or excited. And the waltz was kind of awkward-looking. I really just like Luke and Lorelai better as friends.

Why is Jess even in season four? Someone please tell me this. It seems like all he has done is show up, tell Rory he loves her, disappear, and then show up again at the end of the season to impulsively ask Rory to run away with him. Was Amy Sherman-Palladino hoping to get Milo Ventimiglia back for season 5 so she could do another love triangle for Rory? Because it just doesn't seem like it makes sense otherwise.

I hate Dean's haircut more than I hate Dean. Poor Jared Padalecki. (Don't get me wrong, Dean is totally acting like a douchebag, but I think that whole storyline was really misguided.)

Okay, one more episode to go, and I can cross that season off my list.

Cracked.com has some pretty funny lists and countdowns. Now comes "7 Classic Star Wars Characters Who Totally Dropped The Ball," a list of bad calls and epic fails that shaped Eps IV-VI (language and hilarious caption warning):

Yeah, what was up with those lazy Imperial gunners who decided to just let the escape pod float by? Oh well, nobody ever said the citizens of the GFFA were smart ;).

Today at work I was going through massive stacks of books, seeing which ones were published by AAR (which we therefore have to keep), and which can be given away. And I stumbled across a book about my great-great-grandfather, Henry Steel Olcott.

He's an odd case in our family history. A national hero in Sri Lanka (apparently he's even been called a Bodhisattva?) and the founder of a branch of Buddhist thought that's been instrumental in changing Sri Lankan society. (The Wikipedia article is fairly decent on this: check it out if you're interested.) And yet on this side of the pond, there's still a fair amount of passed-on bitterness, because he abandoned his wife and children to do all this.

Here, have a picture:

So, needless to say, I took the book. Should be interesting reading.
